Transmission Fluid Leak
Identify by location
The puddle position under the vehicle:
Under the transmission pan (center of vehicle)
- Transmission pan gasket — most common.
- Drain plug or pan bolts loose.
- Filter housing on transmissions with bottom-accessible filters.
Front of transmission, near the bell housing
- Front pump seal — expensive. Trans must come out to fix.
- Torque converter seal.
Behind the transmission (drivetrain side)
- Output shaft seal — RWD and AWD vehicles.
- Tailshaft housing gasket.
From the front of the engine bay (cooler lines)
- Transmission cooler lines to/from radiator.
- Radiator transmission cooler section (internal failure).
On the side of the transmission
- Range sensor / shift solenoid wiring grommet.
- Speed sensor mount.
Identify by color

Common causes ranked
1. Transmission pan gasket leak (~35%). Rubber or cork gasket ages and crushes; small drip from pan rail. Clue: puddle directly under the pan; wet pan rail.
2. Output shaft / tailshaft seal (~20%). Rear seal on RWD/AWD; fluid trails along the driveshaft. Clue: leak at the rear of the transmission; driveshaft area is wet.
3. Cooler line leak (~20%). Crimp fittings on cooler lines fail or the line rusts. Clue: leak near the radiator; cooler lines have visible damage.
4. Drain plug or pan bolts loose (~5%). Recent fluid service left loose. Clue: small leak right after service.
5. Cracked plastic pan (Honda CVT and some) (~5%). Plastic pans crack with age. Clue: visible crack.
6. Front pump seal (~5%). Behind the torque converter; trans must come out. Clue: trail along the bell housing top.
7. Shift cable seal / range sensor grommet (~5%). Side of transmission; small drip. Clue: dry pan but wet at sensor.
8. Internal cooler failure in radiator (~3%). Radiator's internal trans cooler develops a leak. Clue: pink milkshake in coolant overflow.
9. Cracked transmission case (~2%). Severe impact damage or casting defect. Clue: visible crack.
How to diagnose it, in order
1. Confirm the fluid type
Cardboard test: put cardboard under the vehicle overnight. Bright red or pink = transmission fluid. Brown = old trans or possibly power steering. Black tarry = differential. Green/orange = coolant.
2. Visual inspection with the engine off
Walk around the underside with a flashlight. Look for:
- Wet spots.
- Drips.
- Coloration on metal indicating where fluid runs from.
The leak source is often a few inches above where the puddle lands — fluid runs along the case before dripping.
3. Engine off, transmission warm inspection
Drive 20 miles, then inspect. Heat thins fluid, often revealing weeping leaks.
4. UV dye
Bottle of trans-specific UV dye added to the fluid. Drive 100 miles, use a black light at night.
5. Check fluid level
Most modern transmissions don't have a dipstick. Level requires specific procedure with engine warm and idling — see factory service manual. Low level confirms loss.
6. Check for cross-contamination
Pull the engine coolant reservoir. Milkshake pink = ATF crossed into coolant from a failed radiator cooler. Trans fluid + coolant mixing is a critical issue requiring radiator and trans flush.

A trans pan gasket replacement is typically $150–$400 at a shop (parts + labor + fluid). DIY is $50–$120 if you have the tools.
How to drive with a leak
Acceptable to drive while diagnosing if:
- Loss rate is under 1 quart per week.
- Trans behavior is normal (no slipping).
- You're topping up between trips.
Not acceptable if:
- Loss rate exceeds 1 quart per week.
- Slipping has started.
- Fluid is burnt (smells of overheated trans).
What to do right now
- Top up the trans fluid with manufacturer-spec ATF.
- Confirm color is red or pink, not burnt brown.
- Schedule the diagnosis within days.
- Don't tow or carry heavy loads until repaired — overheating risk is high.
