Symptom guide
Car Won't Go Into Gear
What it means
To leave park, an automatic needs the brake-pedal-down signal, intact cable/linkage, and good solenoid response. A manual needs the clutch to fully disengage and the linkage to reach all the gates.
Common causes (automatic)
1. Failed brake light switch (~40%). Same fault as
P0571. Clue: shifter unlock manual override
works, normal shift does not.
2. Shifter cable stretched / broken (~25%). Clue: shifter moves but selector inside trans doesn't track.
3. Failed shift solenoid (~15%). Clue: trans codes stored.
4. Low trans fluid / dirty fluid (~10%). Clue: fluid below MIN or dark and burnt.
5. Failed TCM (~5%). Clue: communication codes, no shift response anywhere.
Common causes (manual)
1. Low clutch hydraulic fluid (~30%). Clue: reservoir empty, pedal goes to floor.
2. Failed clutch master or slave cylinder (~20%). Clue: fluid loss with no visible external leak.
3. Stretched shift cable / linkage (~25%). Clue: gates feel vague, hard to find reverse.
4. Worn syncro (~15%). Clue: grinds going into one specific gear.
5. Bent or worn fork (~10%). Clue: mechanical bind.
How to diagnose
- Locate the manual park release (under a small cap near the shifter on most automatics). If car shifts out using release, brake interlock is the culprit.
- Check the brake light operation.
- For manuals, check clutch hydraulic reservoir.
