Timing Belt vs Timing Chain

How to tell which one you have

Method 1: Check the owner's manual

Look in the maintenance schedule for "timing belt" or "timing belt replacement." If a specific interval is listed (commonly 60,000, 90,000, or 105,000 miles), you have a belt. If no mention, you likely have a chain.

When in doubt: look at the front of the engine. Belt is hidden behind a plastic or aluminum cover that's clearly removable. Chain sits behind the timing cover that's bolted to the front of the block.

Method 3: Look at the front of the engine

  • Plastic cover with bolts visible: usually a timing belt.
  • Aluminum cover sealed with gasket: usually a timing chain.

Manufacturer-specified, varies:

  • Older Subarus (EJ25 pre-2013): 105,000 miles.
  • Older Hondas (J35 V6 in Pilot/Odyssey): 60,000–105,000 miles.
  • Older VAG 1.8T (early A4/Passat): 60,000–90,000 miles.
  • Hyundai/Kia interference engines: 60,000–90,000 miles.

What happens when a belt breaks

On an interference engine (most modern engines), valves and piston tops collide when timing is lost. Bent valves and damaged pistons are common. Repair: $2,500–$5,000 (head off, valve job, replace what's bent).

On a non-interference engine (rare in modern engines), the engine just stops. Tow to a shop, replace the belt, drive again. Repair: $400–$1,000.

What happens when a chain stretches
