What the serpentine belt does
The serpentine belt is a single long rubber belt that wraps around the crankshaft pulley and every accessory the engine drives: alternator, power steering pump (if hydraulic), water pump (on most platforms), AC compressor, and sometimes the air pump.
When the belt slips on any pulley, that accessory either doesn't get full rotation or generates friction heat — which produces the squeal.
How to identify the source
When does the squeal happen?

Underhood visual inspection
Belt off, engine cold and OFF:
Belt condition:
- Glazed (shiny rubber): worn out. Replace.
- Cracked across the ribs: worn. Replace.
- Stretched (too loose with tensioner at limit): worn. Replace.
- Chunks missing or split: failing. Replace immediately.
Pulleys:
- Squeak when spun by hand: bearing failed. Replace pulley or accessory.
- Wobble side-to-side: bearing or shaft failed.
- Visible rust or pitting: roughens belt contact, causes squeal.
Tensioner:
- Spring weak (belt deflects too easily): tensioner failed.
- Visible wear or rust on tensioner pulley: replace.
Common causes ranked
1. Worn or glazed serpentine belt (~50%). Belt cracks, glazes, and stretches over 60,000–100,000 miles. Clue: visible cracking; shiny surface where ribs should be matte; vehicle past 80,000 miles without belt service.
2. Failed tensioner (~25%). Spring weakens; pulley bearing fails. Belt no longer held tight. Clue: belt deflects easily under hand pressure; visible play in tensioner.
3. Seized AC compressor pulley (~10%). Compressor clutch or internal bearing seized. Belt slips at that pulley. Clue: squeal worse when AC commanded on; AC may not function.
4. Seized alternator pulley (~5%). Alternator bearing failed.
Clue: alternator can't be turned by hand smoothly; charging
codes (P0562) may appear.
5. Seized water pump pulley (~3%). Water pump bearing failed — usually with coolant leak from the weep hole. Clue: coolant visible at water pump area; engine temp rising.
6. Seized power steering pump (~2%). Clue: hard steering; power steering fluid foaming or leaking.
7. Misalignment from a recent install (~3%). Wrong belt, wrong pulley, bent bracket. Clue: problem appeared after recent service.
8. Idler pulley failure (~2%). Idler bearing seized. Clue: pulley wobble visible.
How to diagnose it, in order
1. Visual + audible inspection
With engine off, look at the belt and feel for tension. Squeeze the longest run; should deflect about 1/2 inch under firm thumb pressure. More = loose belt (worn belt or weak tensioner).
2. Spray-test with water
With engine running at idle, spray a fine mist of water onto the belt. If the squeal stops or changes when water hits the belt-pulley interface, the belt is the problem (worn surface).
3. Listen with a stethoscope or hose
Hold one end of a length of hose to your ear, point the other at each accessory pulley with the engine running at 1,500 rpm. Bearings that are failing sound like a grinding rumble at the source.
4. Test each accessory with belt removed
With the belt off, spin each pulley by hand:
- Should turn smoothly with no play.
- Roughness, grinding, or wobble = that bearing is failed.
This is the most powerful diagnostic — isolates the failed accessory without guessing.
5. AC test
Start the engine and turn AC on. If the squeal appears immediately, the AC compressor or its clutch is the source. Compressor replacement is typically $400–$800; clutch only (when serviceable) is $150–$400.

A complete serpentine belt + tensioner + idler pulley refresh on a 100k+ mile vehicle runs $80–$250 in parts and is solid preventive maintenance.
When to also replace adjacent parts
If you're already in there:
- Belt change at 80k+: also replace the tensioner if it's original. Belt-only on a tired tensioner means the belt's lifespan drops.
- Belt change at 100k+: consider water pump if it's leaking or if the belt-driven design makes pump access easy.
- Belt change with AC squeal: address the AC compressor too; belt-only doesn't fix the AC.
